Residential · Gold Coast, Chicago
The 6,500 sq. ft. duplex Maisonette is a stunning two-story creation in a Beaux-Arts style multi-unit building in Chicago's Gold Coast. The interior architecture was not begun, so all decisions and designs were generated in association with the homeowners. They had two primary concerns. One was that the home be designed in a simplified version of the building's exterior. The other was that the world class art collection be shown in a residential setting and not in a museum style.
This had enormous influence on the floor plan, as large pieces of art needed to be accommodated, meaning large, uninterrupted wall surfaces. All architectural details as well as authentic, imported materials such as antique stone flooring and weathered antique wood doors were to be used as much as possible. All the architectural elements had to be meticulously designed to complement a world-class art collection of such large-scale pieces.
